Event Description

The orchestra, directed by guest conductor Alyssa Wang, performs Andrea Tarrodi’s Camelopardalis,  Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto, and Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suites. Aron Zelkowicz is soloist for the Schumann Cello Concerto. A pre-concert talk is scheduled for Saturday at 7:15 p.m. Tickets for adults and seniors are $25. Admission for youth under 18 is free. For tickets and information, call 978-369-4967 or visit www.concordorchestra.com. The Peer Gynt Suites are some of Grieg’s most famous and well-loved music.  The movements are selected from music that Grieg wrote for a performance of Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt.  Peer Gynt is a charming but selfish and unprincipled mischief-maker whose many adventures frequently get him into trouble. Schumann’s Cello Concerto was written in 1850 toward the end of his life.  It was innovative and broke many of the conventions of classical cello concertos that preceded it.  It is expressive with many contrasting moods and ingenious musical dialog between the orchestra and soloist. Andrea Tarrodi, born in 1981, is a Swedish composer based in Stockholm. Tarrodi explains what inspired Camelopardalis by saying, “One night I dreamt that I had a giraffe. We were the best of friends, my giraffe and I! I climbed up on it, and we jumped out of a window and rode away. We rode through forests, over meadows and mountains. On the horizon we saw a big red sun rising, and a flock of colorful birds flew by. When I woke up I felt immensely happy; it was such a strange and beautiful dream!” Camelopardalis is a constellation in the northern sky, and the word is Latin for giraffe. Conductor Alyssa Wang is the Co-Founder, Artistic Director, and Principal Conductor of the Boston Festival Orchestra, which presents an annual summer festival, chamber music series, and opera. In 2021, she joined the Boston Ballet as Assistant Conductor, conducting full ballet productions throughout the year and serving as Music Director for the annual Next Generation project with Boston Ballet School. As a violinist, Alyssa has soloed with ensembles across the country and is the newest member musician of the Boston Chamber Music Society. As a composer, she premiered her own violin concerto, Swept Away, with the Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh, who commissioned the work in 2023. A native of Ottawa, Canada,  cellist Aron Zelkowicz grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. He appears on stage regularly in the New England region as a member of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, ProArte Chamber Orchestra, the Boston Lyric Opera Orchestra, and as principal cellist of the Boston Landmarks Orchestra. In Boston, he coaches high school and college-aged cellists at the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra (BYSO), Harvard College, and the New England Conservatory. He serves as the Founder and Director of the Pittsburgh Jewish Music Festival, which presents rare and diverse works from Jewish musical traditions.

    Concord Sketches: Emerson House

Simplicity weaves a rich tapestry of beauty and a sense of quietness in the landscapes surrounding Concord. Among them is Emerson’s humble potato garden, where a solitary tree is bordered by a weathered fence. This sketch evokes a meditative calm, capturing moments of stillness that remind us of the profound experiences that often stem from the simplest things, drawing attention to the elegance found in the everyday. And as Ralph Waldo Emerson poignantly expressed, “The invariable mark of wisdom is to see the miraculous in the common.” It might be in the gentle rustle of leaves, the serene play of light across a quiet room, or the unassuming bloom of a wildflower that we find a deeper connection to the world around us.

Everyone Deserves a Chance to Fly: Concord’s Gregory Maguire Soars High

On a spring evening in early April, Concord’s creative community gathered under a starscape of giant whimsical poppies decorating the ceiling of The Umbrella Arts Center for an event that celebrated the arts and honored the acclaimed author of Wicked and a long-time Concord resident, Gregory Maguire. There was much to celebrate as Maguire is actively supporting the rollout of a film adaptation of Wicked, as well as touring for his fifth book in the Wicked series, Elphie.
