Event Description

A public ceremony on Sunday, October 20th, 1:30 PM, will deservedly and respectfully honor Concord’s 19th Century Female Anti-Slavery Society with the dedication of our gifts of a flowering tree and raised brass plaque placed in the Cemetery. The Society, unique in its composition of Black and White members, was founded on October 18th, 1837.

Our guest speaker is Dr. Sandra Petrulionis, Distinguished Professor Emerita at Pennsylvania State University and author of many publications, including “To Set This World Right—The Antislavery Movement in Thoreau’s Concord.” Her presentation will focus on the development and role of the Town’s Anti-Slavery Society. The Thoreau Society honored her with its Distinguished Service Medal in 2020.

In addition, local speakers will present further insights, including the significance of the venue for the placement of the memorial.

Ken Burns’ American Revolution: A View Through the Lens of History

The American Revolution, a new six-part, 12-hour series directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein, and David Schmidt and written by Geoffrey Ward will premiere on PBS on November 16, 2025. The series examines how America’s creation turned the world upside-down. Thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion, won their independence, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe.
