Concord is fortunate, indeed, to be surrounded by the bounty of nature. Residents and visitors alike find enjoyment, comfort, and healing in our winding rivers, peaceful lakes, quiet ponds, and the many protected lands such as those preserved by the Sudbury Valley Trustees and the Concord Land Conservation Trust, as well as public spaces like Walden State Park, Minute Man National Historical Park, and Great Meadows Wildlife Refuge.

No matter the season, nature has something to offer—but fall, with its vibrant colors and crisp air, is especially stunning. Nature is full of things to see, smell, touch, and photograph. Let’s get out and experience it.

Running your hands over the textures of plants (just steer clear of poison ivy!) adds a tactile satisfaction to one’s day. Breathing in the fresh scent of trees and the earthy smell of fallen leaves is part of nature’s quiet magic.

I love seeing rain gather on colorful leaves and branches in the fall.

The Killdeer adds its charm to the season out at Great Meadows, especially when the light hits the Concord River just right.

And don’t miss the Common Yellowthroat Warbler grabbing its breakfast—a reminder to look closely at the world around us.

Keep your eyes open—and up! You might spot an odd and interesting bald-faced hornet’s nest hanging from a tree limb.
